Hi to all the fellow Cinq/Sei owners. Car of nine years recently went in for MOT this year and came back with an utterly shocking emissions failure. Granted I was a little slapdash this year with two primary school girls and a new puppy to contend with, not to mention work etc so I didn’t give the car it’s usual service as everything seemed to be working fine and I thought that it would be ready.

So in it went and out it came and low and behold “Exhaust emissions outside manufacturers limits”, with no other failures. So I asked for a print out, didn’t get one, and was told it was just blowing a lot of crap out the back and to be fair, the tailpipe did look a little sooty for a little while now however had no running problems. So I took it home and gave it a good service, oil and filters, cleaned out breather, air filter, checked for vacuum and exhaust leaks, a set of new NGK plugs and took it back. Made very little difference emissions wise, although pulled better, old plugs were a little black and sooty but no oil on them, had been changed a few years back. Although this time round I had a printout of said emissions (see attached).

I again took her home and had a look on here for some answers for hours, found that it could be the coolant temp sensor so I swapped it out and also reluctantly bought a new cat for good measure, fitted it the other morning at the crack of dawn and later that day drove it on a nice italian tune up, took it back for another test, nice and hot, but no, another fail.

The car itself has a few little mods. A Mckritch Chip, a 40mm tricker throttle body and a Sportex Exhaust. Last year I had to replace the downpipe due to a broken flexi and no matter how much brute force I used on the car and in a vice, I could not remove the old lambda so I changed that too. Could it be a dodgy lambda as it wasn’t retested on emissions last year, just that the downpipe had been replaced and thus no longer leaking? No lights on the dash, no apparent misfiring and no performance issues, it’s strange.

Please help me guys because I feel proper miserable, my 10 day retest is up today and my girls hate a grumpy dad and that includes the wife and as we all do, I love my Sei. Pints of blood I’m giving.

Thanks for reading, Gav.

Don’t do cheap ebay stuff, especially when it comes to car electronics. Mrs has a BMW so I know not to skimp when it comes to leccy parts on a car.

It was an ERA or Delphi one from Eurocarparts I believe.

And just this minute got back from my local Sainsburys with my eldest and as I’m pulling up, clutch cable snaps. Clutch and fork bushings were done a few years back (Valeo) after multiple snappings of old clutch cables and jamming the release bearing. Christmas is coming early for me this year. 🙁

For usual emissions issues I would suggest either lambda sensor or the catalytic converter itself, but there is a part that hasn't been mentioned that sends the signals to the ECU telling it what air & fuel mixture to do etc & that's the coolant temperature sensor, I recently had to change my sensor as it was faulty & sending false signals to the ECU which was making the car run quite rich, reek of fuel & smoke a bit out of the exhaust. I replaced the sensor for £7.50 which solved all the issues so it could be worth looking into.

Coolant temp sensor was mentioned in the first post and has been changed. Turns out, after investigating this morning, the “clutch cable” that just snapped on me is not the clutch cable. It’s the joint on the rod behind the pedal that runs along the bulkhead. Why do I feel like this car is trying to test me this year? 🤪

I didn't see that in the first post until I looked just now 😂, I've never seen them break there before usually it's the quadrant snapping or the cable snapping on the hook end

You'd try Cataclean it's highly recommended, I've tried it too as my previous car, it was an Audi A2, had a very slight smoke coming from the exhaust. After Cataclean the smoke was gone and the MOT Co2 reading was better than the year before.
It worth a try, but also the modification might have added rather more to the factory amounts.

Do I read that right that
Natural Idle Test
Max CO limit is 0.50%
And yours reads at 8.10%?

I was going to suggest a bottle of injector cleaner in the fuel tank and an Italian tune-up, got me a pass when my old car (mx5) failed on emissions.

I think I also changed air filter and fuel filter at the same time.

But I don't think it would be able to fix that much of a discrepancy :/

I use Redex petrol system cleaner in my Seicento's tank every time I fill up & only use E5 as when I first got the car the previous owner had put half a tank in which I assume was E10 as it ran ok but there was a little room for improvement, as soon as I filled up from empty with E5 she was performing much better with much better throttle response

I've had similar issues for the last few years. I've changed everything, even the engine (not just due to emissions) and it's still not great on emissions. Not as bad as yours admittedly, but I've no idea what the issue could be!?

Think I'm going to order some of this, as my Cinquecento is always little "rich" on a cold start for a few minutes. Thanks for the tip.

This may or may not help someone in the future, but the problem did in fact turn out to be a faulty Lambda sensor. I wasn’t too sure at first considering as I said, it was changed when I did the downpipe last year, but there you have it.

Also, the map sensor that I changed for a new one at the time gave up a few weeks later and left me unable to start, so I sent it back, put the old one back one and no problems since. Don’t throw money at it in desperation. 🤪

Regards.

Glad it got sorted👍
