General Elm 327

Bought elm 327 from eBay which says it's modified for fiat.
Got the latest free version of MES
Connects no problem.
Won't connect with adaptor cable 2.
Says it needs a vag interface or something. It goes, before it have time to read it.
I've just done a continuity test of the adapter cable and it seems fine with all the pins connected to the right pins.
It works on my neighbours Delphi setup?
Is it the interface or settings or something else?

UPDATE
now purchased the registered software and still the same. Anyone got any ideas?

According to the vehicle list on multiecuscan the 03 1.2 8v Punto requires an elm for all modules except the airbag which requires a kkl/vagcom/obdkey interface
Does anyone know where I can get one that will work?
I'm see some but don't really know what I'm looking for.
