Hello Folks

Really need to clean up and check over the engine on Bobby (K Reg CLX) Can you give me some pointers as to where to start & what to look for?

Would like to check the electric fan / thermostat - best way how? Also, where is the fuse for the fuel tank? As I can't find it anywhere?

Any help, pictures or diagrams welcome (y)

Thank you - Charlotte & Bobby

Electric fan:

Run the engine up to temperature and let it tick over. The temperature should climb up to approx. 90 degrees (midway) on the gauge, at which point the fan should kick in. If it goes well over 90 degrees and the fan doesn't kick in then you have a fan fault (see below). If the engine struggles to get up to temperature or runs cool then you have a faulty thermostat stuck in the open position. Replace thermostat if this is the case.

If you have a multi meter you can check for a current at the fan terminals. With the ignition on, connect the multimeter to the postive feed of the fan plug and then connect the negative probe of the meter to the battery negative terminal. If you get a reading of approx. 12 volts then you have power to the fan. If you don't get a reading then the power to the fan has a fault - check to see that the fuse is ok. If it is you probably have a wiring fault.

To check the fan itself (and if you know it has power going to it), disconnect the wiring plug from the thermo switch, which is located at the bottom of the radiator (filler side). With the ignition OFF bridge the terminals of this connector with a paperclip or piece of wire, then turn the ignition ON. If all is in order the fan should come on. If it doesn't then you have a bad earth (just had this symptom with my 'new' Uno). Check the earth connections at the 'hedghogs' as these have a habit of corroding and causing poor earths.

Hope this helps!

I changed the thermostat on my CLX last week. It was really easy. I bought one for about £4.20 from my local motor factor, and found something that looked the same shape under the distributor.

The only problem was that the bolt broke when I was attaching the new one and had to take the car to the garage for them to fish it out...

The heater works much better now though.
