General Ducato - Swift kontiki engine probs - URGENT

My father has a swift Kontiki that for the last year we have had constant
engine trouble. we think we have changed or checked just about everything
but it still does it. This is what happens.
whilst driving it starts to miss and loses power. this gets worse very
quickly till you have to stop altogether. Letting it tick over for a few
seconds will clear the problem for a while. Maybe a mile or a meter.
Theres no pattern. Hills are the worst. Sometimes just changing gear
clears it for a while. Also it can be as soon as you start a journey or
after 50 miles, again there is no pattern. There is sometimes back firing
but again not always.
Has anyone got any thought as we and 2 mechanics are stumped!!

What have you done/checked, we aren´t mind readers(yet anyway)
How´s the compression?

fare enough!!

We've had the petrol tank off and checked all fuel lines.
All plugs and leads are new.
The distributer has been off and checked
Fuel pump changed
new filters
carb off and blown
errrrm. sure we've done more but can't remember at the mo

fuel starvation or electric

check compression and spark
check air flow sensor(you can try blocking half the intake with duct tape, it´ll run rich until the problem surfaces then it becomes ok)if it works replace MAS(if so equiped)
also check the fuel pressure(could be the pump controller or pressure regulator)

someone might be familiar with this engine so it might be worth a little waiting

Have you checked the timming to make sue it´s correct?
