Technical Ducato 2001 2005 cutting out

Hi new here, I’ve a ducato 2.8 it starts then cuts out, or it will run for 20 minutes on idle, revs up stutters slightly, ticks over, if you hold it at say 3000 rpm it will sit there the almost like a diesel knock then dies, prime the pump and it fires up, same kind of knock when left on idle then it dies, changed fuel filter/ and in tank pump, along with leak off pipes between injectors,

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, should I start to look at high pressure pump or injectors?

Just a quick question does the high pressure pump have a filter? Could it be blocked if so and cleaned? Just a thought, also what’s class a lift pump ? In tank or high pressure?

Please read carefully what you may have written in haste. In some places I am having to guess what you are trying to say. Perhaps this is why you have not had any other replies.

Have you checked to see if there are any fault codes?

As the 2.8jtd has a lift pump, and the fuel system works under positive pressure, perhaps we can rule out air leaking into the fuel lines.

I am not sure what you mean by "priming the pump", in connection with a 2.8jtd.

You are understandably focussing on fuel supply, but another possibility could be a failing crankshaft sensor. If the crankshaft sensor output is lost, the ECU will stop the engine. On the 2.8jtd the crankshaft sensor is not easy to access, as it can only be reached from underneath, and then there is a subframe restricting access.

I am aware that some common rail hp pumps include a filter, but I do not think that it applies to the 2.8jtd. In this context I am attaching an Iveco drawing of the pump, as it is clearer than the Fiat one, and I have it as a separate file.
