I had a nice little trip to the local breakers on Saturday, and whilst my mates scavanged off old Pugs and Nissans, I wandered over to the Pandas. But there were none :shakehead:

So I whiled away my time waiting by peering at Punto engines and planning my future engine swap. There was a good selection in the Punto line up, 60's, 75's, a 90 and two diesels.
Which leads me to ask, can you fit a Punto diesel to a Panda? And more importantly (to keep my 4wd) a diesel engine to a Panda gearbox?
If I were to guess I would say no, but why guess when one of you clever lot probably know?! (y)

Yeah the diesel panda was mainland europe only, think it was a 1.3 but no idea on the source/history of the unit.

If you're handy with your spanners get a modern 1.3 Multijet in there and you'd be laughing.

Hello Oldschool.
Can we take it from your comment that you know someone who has done this before?

If so, which engine was used and what was the result in terms of braking, handling etc, etc?
Thank you.

The Dogcar is a Seat Terra, which is basically a Mk 1 Panda with a few tweaks.

It has a 1400 Seat Deisel engine and box fitted in very neatly.(y)

Interesting stuff kepp it coming! (y) It sounds like it's perfectly possible to take a whole diesel engine and gearbox and "drop" that into a Panda though the more info the better I say!

But! I would like to keep the 4wd of my Panda and to do that I would need to bolt the diesel lump to my gearbox. Is that possible? I suppose the questions are:

a) Are (or is one of) the small Fiat diesel engines FIRE derived.
b) Is the diesel Punto gearbox the same as the petrol gearbox.
c) And even if a and b are false will a diesel engine bolt onto a petrol FIRE gearbox?
d) AND is everyone else excited?!?! :slayer:

Fiat Uno 1.7 diesel, I think? If it went in an Uno then it'll surely fit in a Panda. Bit of an agricultural lump though, from what I remember.

d) AND is everyone else excited?!?!:slayer:

errrm...no.

it's a diesel

Good luck though (y)

I asked the questions on the Punto section and got this interesting reply.

a no
b yes only the 1.3 multijet
c yes

d

the 1.3 multijet diesel uses a reinforce version of the standard 5 speed petrol gearbox the 514

so it's a 514r r for reinforced

the stud pattern is the same so it will bolt onto a normal petrol fire box also

but they have 75 or 90 hp now i'm sure the standard 514 would cope with this no problem with the light weight of a classic panda but the diesel box would be so much better and it could be mounted in the car on the petrol box mounts as this end is the same also

the engine mount on the other hand would be difficult as on the vehicles it is used in it does not use the normal petrol fire mount like in the panda

and as it's not fire derived non could be swapped onto it

the 1.9 obviously would be out of the question the chassis rails are way to close together

punto 1.7 diesel is the same block as the 1.9 so no also

it might be worth looking into the 1.4 diesel in the uno but i don't know much about that but if it goes in an uno it might be a possibility as it will probably use the petrol fire mount not sure about gearbox thou

The Punto lot have confirmed the 1.3multijet diesel is based on the 1242 16V FIRE so it sounds like that would go. I'm having visions of 3 figure mpg!!!!
But the 1.3 multijet is a pretty new engine isn't it and therefore expensive, was it not only introduced a few years ago?

I would think that the wiring needed for the multijet ECU would be a nightmare. I have always assumed the SEAT Terra 1.4D engine would have been the unit used in the VW Polo Mk2 and 3 (never sold in uk), but it may have been a Fiat unit I suppose.
