Didnt need new gearbox

hi all, good news, i didnt need a new gearbox or cables.
My Marea (*2001 110 JTD ELX Weekend*) has been off the road 7 months as i couldnt afford to get it fixed.
Last week i was talking to a mechanic who suggested trying new oil in it before scrapping it... when i checked there was hardly any oil in it, so emptied it and put new oil in, had it towed off as it was stuck in gear and within 5 mins it was all released and driving perfectly, great news for me as i love the car.
so it only cost me the price of the oil to fix it and not the £500 i was quoted )

how do you know how much oil is in the gearbox?
im thinking mine needs topping up as its been 2 years since i put my engine in complete with new d/shaft seals etc

when i drained the old oil, not much came out, but if you just wanna top it up, it will start to overflow from the filler when its got enough...think mine may be leaking from somewhere
