I'm posting this here as I'm not really sure what to search for, may cars including the Panda have MP3 CD players, so you can just drag folders containing MP3's and play them from the CD player. I'm looking for something that provides the same functionality, but instead of just being able to read CD's for MP3 folders I'm looking for one that could take DVD's and read folders from it. It would be easier say carrying 10 DVD's in the car containing my music rather than 70+ CD's.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a DVD reader? I'm not looking for video dvd playback just dvd data reading.

or....... 800MB CDs; you can fit 100MB extra mp3s on them, an extra 1hr40mins of audio at a minute per MB(low-fi)

If you go to MP4 format you can shrink the file size still further assuming the headunit you choose can support MP4. The panda one doesn't appear to support Mp4. Me, I've standardized on MP3 and use LAME encoder ripping to VBR to minimise file size but any ripper using a fraunhoffer codec should give fairly small file sizes too from CD rips with good audio quality. Try it with your music and see just how small you can rip a standard audio CD.

if you are looking to get rid of a FIAT Panda Blaupunkt 169CD MP3 CD player I'd make an offer.
Me, I wouldn't want to go away from the standard head unit as the CANBUS noise compensation is a good feature in a buzz box like the Panda and the local scum would rip an aftermarket stereo out of my dash within 24 hours of it being installed.

Why not get a Head Unit that takes a USB feed, then you can use memory sticks or a Hard drive ?

My Sony Head Unit can read a hard drive of up to 32gb, show me a DVD that holds that amount of info :D :D :D

If you have an old laptop or pc is worth considering that route for the old HD.

When you can get 8GB usb pen drives in Argos for under 10 euro I wouldn't be messing around with hard drives.

CD-MP3 players are a god-send though. I was travelling in Germany and knew I'd have a new hire car so I burnt 700mb of music to a CD-R and didn't have to listen to German Pop music for the entire week.

16gb memeory sticks are only £17 on Amazon.

Seriously thinking of a new head unit for mine now, not only do I need Ipod connection but my Panda head unit display died, the dealer are not sure if it's covered under the warranty.

Waiting to hear from Fiat themselves now.
