Technical Coils

Engine light appeared yesterday, accompanied by “engine failure” indication.
I’m getting fault 0303 which indicates a problem on cylinder 3 (firing order).
This is actually he second cylinder and on checking, the plug is “black” compared to the other 3. 2 years ago I replaced a coil, the new one being a Lucas one. Coincidentally, that is also on the faulty cylinder,and it has a very strong electrical burning smell, more so than the others. I’ve been trying to test the coils with a multimeter, but am not getting readings that would positively define the faulty component. I’m not keen on driving it as it ended up with a definite misfire. Any clue re testing these coils much appreciated.

Swap the faulty coil with a coil from a different cylinder and see if the misfire moves with the coil.

Tried that but unfortunately the code remained at 0303. Plugs seem ok. As one of the coils has a heavy electrical burn out smell, I’m buying a new one to try. May work, but if not, it won’t have cost a fortune, and I’ll have a spare.

Swap spark plug from missing cylinder to not missing cylinder
See if fault moves

Update. As indicated, problem was on cyl.3, which happens to the 3rd Cyl from timing belt end. It was indeed a failed coil. Replaced and running again. I noticed that the coil connector lead plugs all have broken “locks” but they’re a tight fit in the coil so should be ok. Thanks for help, everyone.
