So we got hit from behind by a Mini (which incidentally came off much worse). The only damage we could see was to the spare wheel well which had been pushed in a bit, wedging the rear wheel a bit.

But there was a clonk. Worse at the beginning than now. Worse when loaded than unladen.

Seems to come from the left rear.

The garage inspected it for the insurance claim (we got more than we paid for the car 6 years ago). They said it was safe to drive but couldn't find the source of the clonk.

I've had a look round and it all looks ok. I think it's the exhaust, but that seemed ok.

Here's a video, you can hear it when we go round the corner.

By the way, yes we have removed everything from the car, including the spare wheel, to make sure it's not something else.

Any ideas from you clever, knowledgeable people?

Thanks for your input guys, and sorry for the late response. It's been so cold and it's my wife's car so I've not had time/inclination to get under it and have a look yet. I will do and will get back to you.

Your help very much appreciated!

Make sure the bump stops are still present and correct. Check the fuel tank straps are still good and properly connected. Also check the damper bushes as these are the commonest cause of rear clonks. I would remove the bumper and make sure all fittings are present and correct.

I had a nightmare with a replacement exhaust on Mrs Dave's 1.2. The exhaust was rubbing, but I could not find where. She had to put up with it far longer than acceptable after each failed attempt to sort it out. Witness marks on the shock absorber bracket eventually exposed what was going on. The box was sitting too far back so the axle hit the box on full bump.
