KoArAnG uses city mode!

Bring it on :D

It only uses more power (electricity from the alternator, i.e. yes will cost fuel) when you actually use it, since all it does it increase the power to the motor (right?). So having it on won't have an affect, using it an awful lot more (i.e. loads more slow paced turning) will. How much? I am guessing a negligible amount.

Me be she-male and absolutely loathe ****y mode :yuck: Way too light for me...

My last car had no power steering so you'll never catch me using the "city" button :slayer:.

I thought power steering was hydraulic and the pump driven by the aux drive belt (as is the alternator), in what way is the city mode assisted, is it increased hydraulic preasure or electric motor assisted? I should think you'd notice a marinal drop in fuel economy with it turned on.

Not on all cars - my old Mondeo was hydraulic, and had to keep it topped up with that red fluid [due to a leakage, darn Fords ;)] else I got serious noises from the engine bay :p

My Stilo is definitely electrically assisted.

My HGT has city mode - can't say I've used it other than checking it works as its up for sale at the moment - if any 1's interested.

Electric power steering has been around for several years now. Most Renaults use it as well as the other cars mentioned above. There is no hydraulic pump in this system. An electric motor does the work the pump did in the past. The reasons the carmakers went to it was that it was cheaper to build, lighter in weight, needs less upkeep, and gives slightly better fuel consumption compared to the pump system.

City mode is a two speed version of electric power steering. When you engage the city mode, it increases the level of assistance beyond the normal level. The system is running 100% of the time no matter if city mode is on or off. Someone correctly stated that it turns itself off at 30 to 40 MPH. If you drive constantly with the city mode on, the increase in consumption will vary with the amount of highway driving you do. In any case, the increase woud be tiny.

Wow,

So don't drive in the dark on a cold night.

Lights on, Heater Fan On.... and if I have 'city' mode on I am done for.....

Not sure I want my car now.....
