My car no longer recognises the remote key (padlock light stays on) but the spare key (non remote) works fine.

Any suggestions what might cause this and what to do?

Might need a battery change in the fob. Could try taking the one out the spare just to try.

Thanks for the response.
Tried a new battery but made no difference. As I understand it the battery drives the central locking not the transponder.

Fiat want about £250 for a new fob and programming

Had same symtoms until a few weeks ago but paid nowhere near that!!

battery has nothing to do with imobiliser - the non remote key has no battery ;)

Take both keys to Timpsons and ask them to check the remote key in their signal tester.

if it's got no signal ask them if they can code a spare key - explain the non remote starts the car. They should test the signal too.

They should be able to make a copy if its an ID48 key and they have level 1 or level 2 coding kit in the shop.

think they wanted £45 for a key cut and coded a couple of weeks ago for me.

this is the bit that may take some explaining to them.

tell them that the remote key turns all the locks and the only issue is that there is no imobiliser.

- ask them nicley if they can just supply and programme a chip and fit it to your existing remote key - there is no space for the chip inside but it can be fitted under the curcuit board in the blue key - not sure on the std black key.

they can ask Dave at ashton branch if they are unsure.

Northwich branch did mine for £30- The key already had the badge removed to expose the screw which is the hard bit.

They needed the spare key and the car for an hour as they code the new chip and existing chip into the carts ECU. if they don't have the spare key when programing the ECU it gets knocked out and can't be re loaded.

Hi
recently, our 2009 1.1 Eco panda wouldn't start after filling up at Sainsburys:confused:. The dash lights would'nt come on though the engine would turn over. I thought that maybe my missus had accidentally filled it with deisel but she was adamant that she didn't:rolleyes:. The fuel reciept proved it, so we called out the RAC.

When RAC man arrived, he connected up his computer and discovered that the ECU had lost the code of the key. He reset the ecu with his computer but this didn't work:bang:. I asked him how he knew the code and he said that he didnt, he was merely setting the ECU.

He then said that he would try plan B, which involved disconnecting the battery for a minute or so. Suprisingly, this worked and the car started. I was even more surprised to find a quick release clamp on the battery so no tools were needed to do this! He said that he'd come across this on a Fiat Punto before.

However, it worked but when driving home I noticed that the steering was very heavy and the power steering light was still on.

When I got home, I switched off the engine for a few mins and when I restarted the light went out and the the power steering started working!
We've not had any probs since although I know now what I will do if it does!(y)

RAC Bloke didn't know what he was chatting, the Code system isn't merly an option in the ECU.

Sounds like battery / voltage issues, glad its sorted now though,

and BTW, can't put diesel in a modern petrol, the nozzel won't fit (y)

Thanks for all the comments. Took the key to my local auto locksmith (Buckle & Jones in Carlisle) and they said they couldn't copy FIAT keys and anyway they didn't have any blanks. So I took it to Timpsons in Carlisle and they were very helpful and made a copy. I had to nip back to the car with the new transponder taped to the old key and follow Timpson's written instruction (basically put key in ignition, turn to first position, hold for five seconds and remove; Repeat three times). Returned to have key assembled and pay the £40. Job well done and now I feel happier with a working spare key.

Two thoughts:-

This happened at home so I was able to use the spare key. If it happened again elsewhere I could be in difficulties. Should I hide the spare key somewhere in the car?

Can I remove the transponder from the new Timpson's key and fit it in my old remote? This would save me carrying around the remote AND the new key

I have had a similar problem with my remote key for my 2005 Panda. The engine immobilizer stopped recognising the key, and whilst it worked as a remote for the locks, and worked in all the locks as a mechanical key, the engine would not start with it. I took the spare and the now useless remote key to Timpsons in Tesco in Dudley. (Thanks very much for all the work: only £15 as not complete fix!) To my surprise the chap there said that there was a functioning code chip in the remote key that would not start the engine, but it was issuing a different code from the spare (solid) key that was working / starting the engine. We cloned a copy chip from the spare (solid) key, which his equipment said was working, but when this was placed below the printed circuit board in the remote key, it did not work in the ignition. However, when I removed the printed circuit which operates the remote system from within the remote key, and tried again: Hey Presto! It works in the ignition. We conclude that the engine immobiliser chip for the remote key is in/on the printed circuit that works the remote. If the chip was completely bust, putting a new clone below the old non functioning one would probably have worked, but as the engine immobiliser chip is corrupted, and remains part of the remote printed circuit board, I can either have a remote control for the locks or a functioning ignition spare, but not both!
There are 2 chips visible on the printed circuit board. The chap in Timpsons thought that if I knew which one was the corrupted engine immobiliser, and which was the remote radio chip, that perhaps drilling a hole in the corrupted immobiliser might get everything working together again. He can not reprogram the Fiat chip on the PCB. Any Ideas?

'The earlier flip remote keys had a separate 'capsule' within the housing which is actually for the immobiliser.'

Thanks. This is a remote held together by a small Ph1 screw hidden behind the Fiat decal. Neither the Timpson chap, nor I could see any space similar in size to his chip within the housing into which you could place a chip. Also his chip only worked when the Printed Circuit Board for the remote radio was removed, suggesting the corrupted immobilizer chip was on the PCB. Does that fit with what is known about the Fiat remote keys?

Hi have just read this post, did the last contributor ever find out what item on the PCB was the immobiliser chip, as I am having exactly the same problem with my 2004 panda

Many Thanks for any Help
