Good afternoon all.
It's a long story, but basically I have been installing some car diagnostic software on to my wife's old laptop (Vista). The install has been about 80% completed, but then hung, so I left it for the night (last night).
When I switched on this morning the keyboard and mouse pad are not working. I have plugged in an external mouse and that works.
I suspect something has upset the keyboard but the driver says it is up to date. When I look at device manager there is an error code (Code 19) "configuration in the registry is incomplete or damaged".
Can anybody suggest a course of action, or a website from which to download a tool to fix it? I am nervous of importing something worse from a dubious website.
Thanks for reading.

System restore??

Most antivirus programs allow you to create a bootable usb drive to hunt out installed viruses and irradicate them.

Though I'd suggest a reformat and reinstall of windows, followed by not downloading dodgy software from dodgy sites

I think you can create a bootable version of windows from another pc or try a linux install thats free and can be done from USB, Vista was always tricky even when it worked.
If not get a cheap copy og win xp or win 7, both much better and reload this.
always creat a restore point before changing anything, its like magic. Linux is much faster for old pcs and laptops but not sure if the program for diagnostics will run on it

Code 19

Your registry may be bad. (Code 19)

To check your registry, click Check Registry. If the registry is bad, Windows will restart your system and go back to a previous registry that is good.

Solution button: Check Registry

This code means that the registry returned an unknown result.

To resolve this issue, follow the recommended solution, which will run Scanreg.exe. If this does not resolve the issue, type "scanreg /restore" (without quotation marks) from a command prompt. Finally, remove the device from Device Manager, and then redetect it using the Add New Hardware tool in Control Panel.

It goes without saying but check for and remove viruses etc before attempting fix.

On another note I HATE the BMW software with a passion. I do all things "IT" for a living and failed to get certain versions of it running without ruining the Windows install it was on so I'd be more inclined to say it's the software itself rather than a virus / malware :bang: :yuck:

Thanks Chris. The BMW software, one of them in particular DIS is very involved using VMViewer and the machine hung whilst it was installing from a CD disc so I suspect it was to do with that.

Thanks for your advice, but for the record it was from a disc not a download, but the install didn't complete so I suspect that was part of the problem.
Got to fix it now - it's Mrs Codgers!
On the plus side when I have sorted it I am upgrading the ram so at least it should run a bit better.
