Hello

I had my cambelt replaced today at my local Fiat dealer and they said I needed a new camshaft pulley because the woodruff key was broken. So we ordered one and now is all sorted (y).

They gave us the pulley to show us. I can't see what part is broken or is the woodruff key a seperate part?

A Woodruff key is a half-moon shaped piece of metal that sits into a slot machined in the camshaft (with a Woodruff cutter, actually!) & locks the shaft to the pulley. The pulley has a slot machined in its bore to take the key. Have a good look at the slot in yours & it will probably be mashed up if the key broke up.

Off topic slightly!!
is that a 1.6?
if it is then im wondering if there maybe a issue arising as the cars age, that would be the second woodruff key failure ive heard about in the last few months, and in all the years ive been motoring including working on a engine rebuilders ive never seen a failed woodruff.
maybe the keys are made from the same monkey metal that the 1.6 gearbox are made from.......

No mate, its a JTD.

Whoever changed the belt last broke this woodruff key but instead of replacing the pulley, they wedged it back in with some paper:eek: Fiat said it could have gone at any moment so we got a new one fitted. Makes you wonder why some people are prepared to bodge something as important as the cambelt system. The pulley cost £45, but it needed doing whatever it cost.

:eek:WTH!!!! omg that is terrible, who in thier right mind substitutes metal with paper, ive seen a lot but that is right up there!!.
any good mechanic would know this is unacceptable, not even a diy mechanic like a lot of us are would dream of pulling a stunt like that...
your so lucky it held, all the engines on the stilos are interferance so you would have caused untold amount of damage if the sandpaper let slip.
£45 for a pulley isnt that bad a price, i just had to replace a oil level sender probe on mine and it cost a bit more than that, less than half the amount of engineering material as well.
any garage in thier right mind would either charge the customer for the broken part or take it on the chin, either way i wouldnt mind paying an extra £45 to replace a broken part like that.
can you name and shame the garage or dont you have the documentation?.

Theres no documentation about when the belt was last changed, don't know if it was a garage or the previous owner who changed it. When I brought the car the previous owner said it was done a while back but might not need changing yet. However, with no records I decided to get it done - cambelt kit, water pump and of course replace that pulley!
