Hi, I am looking to get my cambelt changed on my 53 plate 1.4 16v sporting, I have been quoted £190 inc. VAT from the dealer my family go to, is this a good price or should I get some more quotes, also what have other owners payed for a new cambelt.

Cheers guys :) ill go ahead with it, ill ask him about the locking tool, the water pump and the o-ring, he did ask if my car had air con dont know why. Also my car does make a fairly loud whining noise which corresponds to the revs (higher revs= louder noise), any idea what this could be?

Make absolutely sure that they have the proper tools. The full set costs something like £80 and with them, it's not a difficult job. Instructions in something like the Stilo manual (in the Downloads section).

If not done correctly, or with tippex, the engine could be rendered scrap within a second or so, or, more likely, never run correctly.

All the 16v FIRE engines are interference engines -- the valves are quite capable of hitting the pistons if the timing is fubared.

It may even be worth buying them, therefore: considering the price the cambelt change is costing. You can always sell them on; or lend them -- for a fee -- to other 16v owners (presuming the 1.4 tools are the same as the 1.2 -- fingers99...?).

More or less. The full Sealey kit does Alfa. Lancia and FIAT 16v engines: the 1.2 16v, 1.4 16v and the T Jet. Includes the piston positioning tools, camshaft and crankshaft locking tools, tensioner adjuster and the VVT sprocket locking tool (I think the Punto 1.4 16v needs the VVT locker). Many of the cheaper kits miss out the tensioner and VVT tools.

I must put up a "for hire" ad at the weekend. Deposit will be hefty, but I'm thinking £10 per week or part of.

Depends which 1.4 16v. There are at least 3 varieties out there: early ones without faux VVT (Stilo, Idea, for example) later ones with VVT, and then the T Jet which is a little different in every detail, but probably same as regards cam timing.

Ben has their IP address and can launch cruise missile attack from his secret island off the Korean coast. (y)
