Hi
I have a fiat punto 2002. Today I had to perform a emergency stop due to a child running out in front me to get his ball! Luckily nobody was injured. But after the incident my brakes completely stopped working and all of my brake fluid leaked out. Any ideas on what needs fixing and roughly how much this well cost. Any information will be very much appreciated.

Thanks sophie

Hi Sophie and WELCOME TO THE FORUM

It's likely that the extra pressure exerted on the system during your emergency stop has caused a weak or corroded pipe or seal to burst.

Where was the fluid leaking from? Ie by a wheel or from under the engine etc?

Obviously it goes without saying that the car should NOT be driven untill the problem is fixed and the system bled through thoroughly.

Thankfully the braking system held up enough for you to perform your emergency stop.

Hi
Thank you for your quick response. The fluid looks like it's leaking near the wheel. To be honest I did have to pull the hand brake up shortly after I hit the brakes as I realised something was wrong. I did not drive after that had to get a recovery vehicle to get me home.
Thanks.

you havent said front wheel but it normally is as a front flexi goes, its quite common on age/ bad fittment/or wrong aftermarket rims fitted
hoses are £12 plus an hours labour so its not too expensive if you get someone who charges reasonable rates and doesnt want to rob you once its on his jack

Yes sorry the front drivers side wheel. Ok that doesn't sound to bad. I've had it dropped off to the garage this evening so they can have a look at it in the morning. Just didn't want to get ripped off. Thank you!

This problem happen to once when braking at the highway one of the front fluid hose fail causing one of the two separate brake circuit to be out of service luckily the other circuit was enough to stop the car . later it turns out to the mechanic fault because after changing the CV joint instead of properly fit the hose in place , it was near the wheel so that while moving the wheel was grinding the hose and then it fails after losing its strength. Before this incident happen I could smell like as if rubber was burning but I didn't know its source .

Having one burst doing an 70mph hard braking for lights, its horrible
Mine went with a bang - ie braking braking - BANG - pedal to the floor

Luckily the punto uses a Split diagonal system
Right Front + Left Rear
Right Rear + Front Left

Should 1 side of the circuit fail like above drivers front and passenger rear would not work as they pressure was lost
But if you keep the pedal to the floor, the way the pistons inside work means the Driver rear and passenger front were still working - maintaining atleast 50% braking :)

but it means the cars is done, require a repair

Alot of garage break the bracket that holds the pipe, as a result it means the new pipe rubs and it bursts :(

Make sure that bracket is present on both sides

Personally if 1 has failed, the other i would personally say should be done as well
Since the system is dry of fluid now - it wont take much longer todo

The only issues you may get is if the rear cylinders have seized and it means you cant bleed them or they snap off... or the pipe lets go etc etc it gets fun honest!

I think i paid £60 for a rear Flexi hose to be replaced once, that was corroded and failed MOT
My mechanic replaced it for me, but he snapped rear cylinder and pipe trying to bleed it, so i ended up with
1 new cylinder
1 New rear brake pipe
1 new flexi
Bleed and top up of fluid and the labour for that £60 :) Not bad eh?

Fronts alot easier tho :)

There are some pics somewhere on the forum of the right way round for the hoses.

I would have the mechanic check the condition of the steel brake lines too when you're having it done (the pipes that connect to the flexis), they eventually rust and weaken.

And the rear flexis too for good measure.
