My Yamaha's tax should have been renewed recently so as winter was coming, I decided to SORN it instead, especially as the tax was due as well.

But I forgot, and this morning I found the second reminder among a pile of mail I should have dealt with before now. I took it to work and tried to SORN it online. Unfortunately the message on the screen was that the vehicle couldn't be indentified and would I like to try again. I did and the same message came back.

Then I tried it with the registration number instead. Same result.

Ok, so I'll try it by phone and started inputting the details from the mobile. Still the same. Tried again, still unable to identify the 'bike. A new approach was called for and I went through every option on the phone menu, despite hearing the message that I would be put through to the earliest available agent and that the call would be recorded for training and security reason.

I still haven't managed to speak to anyone to get an answer as to why I couldn't SORN my Yammie. One reason could be that the Road Fund Licence expired at the end of October. Oops.

Any suggestions as to how I can get round this before the fine arrives, or how I can actually speak to a human being will be greatfully received.

I bet you will have to tax the bike, then apply for a SORN on the 5th of the following month to be enacted at the end of the month, then apply for a tax refund!

You may find that the Manchester one is still open for a few more days.

Most of them have now been closed; and there are only five left, I believe... -- but not for very long, I'm afraid. Such a shame... -- it was this kind of situation they were so good at dealing with....
I'm pretty certain the one in Manchester has

I'm assuming you're trying online using the number from the reminder document? Try doing it using the V5 document number instead, I've just done it for the Mitsu online using the V5 as I didn't have the reminder letter.
Thanks, I'll try that one.

Could be tricky as I've let the insurance lapse and the MOT expired September.

Not sure if it will help but try this number, 01792 782901, it is for a specific dept at DVLA Swansea but not sure which! I have used this number a few times while dealing with a V62 and they answer straight away. Worth a shot?

Go to your local dvla office?

Just call them, say you sent it in the post on X day and that you wish to make sure they've SORN it as you've had the 2nd letter.

Case Law out there IIRC where they tried to fine someone, he took DVLA to court and won as it was only his responsibility to put it in a post box and not to make sure DVLA received it ;)
