Anyone know what steps i got to take to apply for my motorbike licence.. i have decided i want a bike licence aswell as a car one.. i just have no idea how to go about it... :eek: any help would be appreciated...
 
Same, A big regret of mine is not taking my test when i was 17, could have been able to ride with a passanger and have any bike i wanted now :(

you need your CBT which is around £100 now.

take a few bike lessons then go for your test, if you fail it's no where near as much to pay for as the car test and waiting list is only a couple of weeks.
 
Check your current driving license. On the paper bit you should have a section about provisional entitlements, check it has A there. It won't have on your plastic card.

Take your CBT, roughly £100 for a day course.

Take your theory test for motorcycles, roughly £30

Go though either A1 training or DAS. A1 training is if you're 17 or over and limits you to 33bhp for 2 years after passing and then you can ride anything. DAS training is for if you are 21 or over and then you can ride anything you want after passing. A1 is roughly £350, DAS is roughly £450, test fees included.

Both courses are roughly 3 days each including the test but this can vary depending on ability. The test fee is usually added on to your training and the trainer will book this for you. The test it 35 minutes long and is similar structure to the car test.

yeah i got the A on the provisional entitlements... cheers.. not really sure what to go for.. either A1 or DAS... i could just do the A1 and then wait 2 years... but i could do the DAS, it maybe 100 more but i wouldn't have to wait 2 years for a better bike... :chin:

i will have to think about this.. but for now i will just get this CBT training out the way... (y)
 
I wondered about the same decision and eventually opted for the DAS. You don't have to wait then. You get some idiots who jump straight onto the biggest most powerful machine they can but as long as you just remember you are still really a learner and to start off on something a bit more sensible (I opted for a CBR600) then you will be fine.

Also, there aren't many 33bhp bikes around and although you can get most bikes restricted to 33bhp you would probably end up paying more in the long run then you would by paying the extra for the DAS.

i was thinking for opting the DAS option, save alot of waiting in the long run, but it doesn't mean iam going for the most biggest powerful bike out there, just start of with something normal till iam more skilled... (y)

i guess the first thing to do is get this CBT training out the way... (y)

I did my DAS about 10 years ago. I used to ride bikes when I were a lad when you could ride a 250 on a provisional licence - forever. Riding a bike safely is as much about maturity/cowardice as riding ability so at the age of 40 I bought a Yamaha FJ1200. 125bhp and 250kgs. 500 bhp/tonne. That'll do me. What you could do is take the A1 and then buy a mid size bike like a 600 and have it restricted to 33bhp. But, if you're over 21 I don't quite see the point.

(y) well iam 22 in august, so i dont see the point in the a1 now, so i might aswell just do the DAS and have access to the higher powered bike's and i dont have to wait 2 years.. if i complete the DAS, i can then get a bike over the 33bhp restriction... :) witch is more my taste.. the a1 is really only for the young... :D
 
I know I'm probably going to sound like your Dad, but there is far more to riding a bike than driving a car. 4 wheels can get you out of a s**t load more trouble than 2. When you pass you need to exercise caution coupled with a fair amount of cowardice. Having said that, riding a bike is a far more visceral experience than driving a car. You are in touch with every part of the machine rather than just the controls. Your front brakes are 18" below your hands, there is no cable between your limbs and the gearbox. Everything you do is immediate. Enjoy.

my dad said the exact same thing, :D. as he hate's them.. as i told him, bike's do require more skills, and there is always the possibility of a fatal accident.. but that's the reason i want to take it up, i want to challenge my self with getting the skills to drive these things. plus the joy of riding feels so completely different to that of a car...

my plan is after i completed the CBT training and passed the test.. i will opt for further advanced training just like the pass plus course for driving cars... i will not be one of these complete idiots who jump on the most powerful bike they can get, i will take it easy as the threat of crashing is more possible....

specialist press. It's run by the Police (Heddlu, see, bi-lingual) but don't worry about that it's still supposed to be very good. Haven't done it myself so
when you pass let me know and I'll come over to your neck of the woods and we can both do it as the one run by North Wales Police is supposed to be first
class.

cheers mate (y). just checked the bikesafe website and it seems very good.. i will have to get some details from my local police force, as it does seem good.. i will let you know when i pass, doing the course together would be great, could also give us some of your riding tips... :)

was happier gettnig the 750 as my first bike... i'm in control of the throttle... only goes as fast as i want it too... unless the naughty gremlins take over:devil:
 
I bought it form a guy I worked with, he gave me the keys with the words "...until you get used to it keep it below 7000rpm..." took me over a month to pluck the courage up to find out what he meant :D

Should have known tho, the rev counter started at 3000rpm :slayer:

the 33bhp limit is so crap, that's why iam going straight for the DAS training, get any bike i want then... :D
