I just recently purchased a Barchetta and noticed lower belt is stating to shred. Does that belt that goes to the AC compressor only operate that or does it run other things as well? A mechanic recommended if it does not connect to anything else to go ahead and cut it off so they can get a proper size belt versus taking the chance of driving it to the shop and having it degrade to the point it may cause other damage.

Also if I am going to have that belt replaced maybe best to go ahead and do the main belt as well. Can someone point me where to buy a kit for that replacement as well? Any other recommendations concerning PM service now for a newbie Barchetta owner would also be appreciated.

Thanks in advance for the input.

Others on Forum may have more specific advice.
All I can find on Fiat belts is in photos from my technical manuals, but not specific to your Barchetta.
I would say if you are unsure even after inspecting it then get a experienced mechanic to verify before cutting anything off, as it is too late then if wrong. Usually if it is a separate belt you will see the two separate lines they take, one in front of the other. Obviously the crankshaft pulley if visible will be wider to handle two drive belts if so as most newer vehicles just use one "serpentine " belt.

Looking the the workshop manual then it appears to be a single belt that drives the alternator, power steering pump and aircon compressor.

It is also a serpentine belt and when these start to fail they normally shred stands, runs of cord, that can get into the cam belt area. You need to get a new belt ASAP.

If you use ePER on this site then if your VIN/chassis number is accepted (i.e. not a US one like on later Fiats) then you can get the Fiat P/N: and from there find and after market one.

It is definately two separate belts. So mainly unsure what all the small lower belt runs. Still would like info on how to get a replacement (where to order from and PNs kit # erc.)
Thanks!

It'll be one of them from this page
And within that it'll be one of the ones with '+E025' next to it as that signifies Aircon. The actual one will depend on vehicle date or engine number. As @s130 said, using the VIN search should help filter the list, if it doesn't complain to me 😀

Well I looked at it again today and noticed oil and the smell of gas in the garage. I sure hope its not as bad as I feel it may be...

Lots of info on the Gates power grip website. When I replaced my alternator belt I noticed the tension pulley wasn't rotating smoothly so I replaced that as well. Once you have the Gates part numbers you can order them from ebay. My sister's 98 model had the slightly longer cam belt.

Correction, sister's b was late 2000 X reg.

Hopefully I can get some help as I am still trying to locate the proper parts to get this repaired. My mechanic is asking for a timing belt kit which he says should include the water pump and tensioners, belts etc. to do this job 100%. Can anyone get me a link or company to call to order these parts?

It is for a 1998 VIN: ZFA18300000030859

Sorry I can’t match the VIN, but when I did mine, I got it from Amazon

Is there a published belt replacement procedure somewhere I can forward to my mechanic concerning the Barchetta? He is thinking he needs to drop the engine. Thanks in advance.

Hopefully someone on Forum has specific advice, assuming you mean the timing belt details.
I have a couple of AutoData Timing Belt books, up to 96 and the other one 2000 on roughly:(
However if you have the Engine Series Code and engine cc, rather than Vin. It may be of some help.
Mainly for the engine type as the manuals do not specifically say Barchetta.
Though is it possible your mechanic is registered with Auto Data or Snap On online services as they may be more specific.

You definitely don’t need to take the engine out.

You access it from the passenger wheel well, there is a panel which comes out easily

Can’t remember where it was, but o followed a simple guide, let me see if I can find it

EDIT: Went back through my story from a few years ago and I followed instructions from @Davefridge on posts 31 & 32 here…

Hopefully @LeftyGreg has been able to help.:)
All I could find in reference to that engine Series 183A1.000 was it fitted in the Fiat Punto 1.8 16 valve 99-03 in the Technical Service Manual, neither of my Timing Books mention that engine Series, only what may be the possible fore runner the 182 A2.000 fitted in the 1.8 16 valve used in the Fiat Bravo1995-96.
Sorry I couldn't help.:(
