Hi this is my first post here and I’m in desperate need of some advice. I’ve recently bought a 2006 1.4 16v punto Sporting, I love the car and hadn’t had any faults other than check brake pads come up ( I assume because of my heavy foot and heavy braking)

I was driving not too long ago and it was driving fine, I then pulled up and stopped the engine but when I started the engine again I was met with a beep. I check my dash a lo and behold the check engine light and asr lights are on. I have no issue driving without the asr but as I tried to pull away in first it felt very sluggish and wasn’t giving consistent power. I stopped my car and was considering how I was going to drive it to a mechanic or home but when I turned the car back on it drove fine? The check engine light and asr lights are still on and I’m just wondering if this is a cheap and easy fix or if the car is done for? I’m a little cash strapped so I’m hoping the former.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated

I have just gone to check again and it is also showing esp unavailable to be honest the car doesn’t sound like it’s doing great

1st Post on a forum.. 😊

It's a chain of errors often seen on here,

The forums SEARCH can be quite useful, but you need to know what phrase to SEARCH
I have searched things like esp, asr and hillhold and it doesn’t seem to be fruitful, maybe I don’t know what I’m looking for but most threads usually don’t come to a conclusion or if they do there is no post to show it. This website is ancient after all and trawling through threads is proving to be quite tedious. Could you point me in the right direction?

Actually what would really help is telling me if the issue is very common across all fiats and has the same fix more than anything. I can find help on a fiat 500 but I feel that my old punto is gonna need a slightly different solution

Lots of the issues are related to parts fitted to many fiat and Alfa Romeo models

Does your car have Cruise Control?
(a stubby little stalk below the indicator stalk)

That will be effected by Brakes sensors giving trouble 😉

unfortunately my car didn’t come with cruise control although if it causes issues maybe it’s good thing

I have an on and off again brake pad warning light come on so I’m inclined to believe it’s something to do with the brakes

A lot of threads mention a brake light switch but my attempts to find it haven’t been fruitful. Other than that I have no clue I’ve only owned the car about a week and she’s been sweet to me up until today.

Worth checking the Brake Fluid Level 😉

Ok.. So the punto model is a 199

My 2007 and my 2023care both 100 as is the 2010 model of Evo many of these Niggles are common to all 3

The Brake light switch can be a cause as it sends signals to various devices.

Stability control, etc all use
brakes/ ABS

thank you for the advice, I had not thought of checking the brake fluid level. I didn’t think that would affect the stability control of the car

I’ll have to look more into the brake light switch, im hoping that’s the root of my issues as it seems to be quite a cheap and easy fix that you can do yourself.

I am meeting someone with a multiecuscan (not sure if I spelt that right) to see if a diagnosis can narrow my search. I appreciate all the help and will update this thread when I hopefully have a solution or atleast know what my problem is :)

Just a quick update about the condition of my car, I’ve found out that switching the key to avv and off three times generally gets rid of the asr warning light. Im certain that it’s just a work around and not an actual solution.

Aswell as that I read somewhere online that leaving the battery dissconnected for a few hours could potentially help but alas that didn’t seem to do anything.

On a more negative note as I was pulling off my drive to head to work this morning, I lost power steering completely with a warning message appearing on the dash. Switching the engine off and on again seemed to give me power steering again so I’ve whacked it on the drive until I can troubleshoot the issue

I know power steering draws a lot of power from the battery so I’m hoping it’s because I left the battery disconnected and not a larger issue.

Thank you for all the help I received :)

My car just decided it didn’t want warning lights anymore and I no longer have an asr light or warning light on the dash. Hopefully this is a permanent thing and not temporary, regardless this forum is very informative and I’m glad I found it :)
