right after having this laptop for a while its really starting to bug me that stuff temporarily hangs and the damn thing just runs slow ive done everything my IT guy (my brother) i can think of to get the CPU usage down at idle but its still idling at 30%+

he suggests CPU upgrade to a dual core processor... but what? (i understand there maybe some chip architecture issues)

heres my machine specs
Acer Aspire 3680
Win 7 Ultimate x86
2Gb RAM
1.73Ghz Pentium Celeron M (Socket 775/T, 533fsb)

i want to squeze in the fastest processor i can get my hands on but i dont really know the difference between a dual core, core 2 duo etc etc or what would be best suited.

i had exactly the same setup on my Extensa but that had a 1.73ghz Pentium Dual Core and it never faultered and was always more than fast enough for my needs.

speaks for itself but that svchost entry is rouge, 99% of the time it's 0-2%

I'm not looking to upgrade the whole thing... it still works brilliantly for my needs aside from it being a little slow.

Personally I'd do a clean install. You could spend weeks hunting down causes for svchost.exe to use more CPU / memory than it should.

While you're on do a physical hard disk check to make sure the HDD is 100% ok and not causing any underlying issues: http://www.hirensbootcd.org/hbcd-v106/

Download and burn that boot CD. Lots of hard disk diagnostics on there. I'd start with Seagate "Seatools".

a quick google shows the laptop never shipped with anything but celeron processors so i wouldnt advice to change it to a core 2 duo or anything that matches the socket due to bios support may be limited or not there at all

i would recommend a ram upgrade to 2gb @ 533mhz fresh windows install and if the size of the hard drive isnt important as its used for such small programs a small SSD upgrade 64GB 32GB along them lines will make a massive difference to the system.

you have the fastest cpu that shipped with the laptop already.

It's a 2month old build... I've now seen it listed as 3 socket types... Socket T, P & M don't really wanna go ssd if I can avoid it I like my 120gb that's in there
