I can only imagine that the read speed of the older discs are alot lower than the new discs causing it to read and convert them slower than it does of todays standard.
 
Just thought it was strange old CDs take longer to read and often have less information on them

Really old CD's can have their information deteriorate. Early batches of pre-recorded discs used an ink for the disc labels that attacked the CD itself over time, and loads of scratches on an otherwise ok disc can cause read problems. Often the ripper program is reading and then re-reading the information if it encounters checksum errors during the process. This can lead to the rip process taking longer than on a 'good' CD.

I also think that Y2Dom is correct as well in stating that older discs aren't designed to be read as quickly as modern discs.

Might be quicker to use a file sharing/ Torrent program and download the album off the net ;)
