hi all i have a punto hgt 1.8 2001 the alternator belt melted due to the tensioner seizing and the car cut out could it do damage to the engine as it will not start

Hi and WELCOME TO THE FORUM

Simple answer is yes, there is potential for it to do damage however I wouldn't panic just yet.

When you say it won't start, is the engine turning over? But won't fire? Or will the engine not turn over at all?

If it's not turning over at all, have you removed the auxillery drive belt and checked the battery is sufficiently charged (it may not have been charging properly when the auxillery drive belt went) and then tried to turn it over?

thanks for the photo great help :)

Except for that is a picture of a 1.2 8v and not your 1.8. Your crank sensor is in a different location (along with various other things) and is less likely to have been damaged by the failing auxiliary drive belt.

When you say the car "cut out" did it just stop? misfire then stop? Stop With a bang?

Also when you try and start it, does it spin over fast or slow? Does it try to fire or nothing at all?

Any damage been caused to the cam belt covers down by the crank pulley?

Alan

timing belt intact and spins slowly when i try and start hopefully see more today when it gets towed back professsionally because person before me took the towing eye away

Cambelts are sometimes hard to check visualy looking through agap in cover,

after this kind of misshap id be checking the belt hasnt been stripped of any of its teeth,

imho id check the timing and condition of belt before this engine is turned over anymore..

hi again how easy is it to check my timing belt
many thanks:(
