Technical Abarth Punto Evo brembo-brake part question

Hello team,

this isn't quite my neck of the woods, and I'm asking about a car that isn't mine- so this might come across as a bit daft.

A pal of mine is having what might be referred to as 'third party' servicing done on his Abarth Evo, and the mechanic can't get the pads out of the callipers due to the guide-pins being seized in there.

He's going to have to angle grind 'em out (as you do :chin and new ones are to be sourced.

The question is; where would 'one' source such guide-pins for one's car? FIAT are shut, and Euro Car-Parts has drawn a blank.

I was sent this as a possibility, but I don't (as an Abarth layman) see any tie in between the Brera and the Abarth Evo- but what do I know?!

You could even drop a message to that seller on eBay as it looks like they are brake specialist they could advise you if that kit will fit or tell you what till.

Realistically I’m not sure how the garage will get the pins out with a grinder without destroying the callipers.

These type of calipers I'm guessing rather the the slide pin type
Still likey to damage the spring fixing kit however

Whenever I have worked on this type of calliper before I have always replaced the pins and plate as a matter of course buying the fitting kit when I bought the pads

Once you knock the pins out so far they pull out the rest of the way. So it’s not like you put a lot of strain on the plate and you could if needed/wanted reuse them.

As I said contact the eBay seller who you listed they are most likely the best people to advise you on what you need as they are brake specialists

Thanks Chris (crikey that's expensive for the full conversation kit, eh? But then- thinking about it; maybe not!!)

Thanks Andy- yes; I'm not sure what to say; we'll have to see what happens; I have a feeling it's sort of emergency-maintenance now, rather than 'best practise'.

Let us hope high skills are involved- the potential cost of damage could be significant.
From what I understand of what you have said; and from what I understand having fooled around with calliper rebuilds on the Brembo 4-pots of FIAT Coupe's; I must say the angle-grinder idea sounds insane.

The only benefit I can see with the grinder..

Slice off the pins through the aperture

Both sides of the discs.. so the pads can come out


The heat through the pins should be enough to help break the bond.. and with a sharp tap should drift back through

Amazing how 'toasty' things get when you play the grimder on them
Thats how I tend to remove sheared bolts
