Hi folks! I purchased my ‘71 F last week. I received it yesterday and it won’t start. I have a vid of it driving up on the trailer, so I know it runs, but today when I do starting procedure(key on, clutch, choke, and pull starter handle) absolutely nothing happens aside from the speedo lights coming on. I charged the battery last night, so I know it’s got that…..again, I’m a newbie, so any direction you can point me would be appreciated!

Yea first thing we need to know is, is it turning over but not firing?
Or, nothing happens when you turn the key?

Will be easier to advise once this is clear

Hi

Do you mean the engine isnt turning?

Watch those dash lights.. do they FADE : Dim..??

It could just be a poor battery :)
It doesn’t do anything. Dash lights strong.
I went back and pushed the little starter button, and then I got it to start turning over now, but won’t start. I have to keep going back and pop that little button on the starter, and then she’ll let me get a few good attempts in, but no start. I’m guessing this starter is going bad(maybe amping other things.

Not being funny, or doubting your abilities, but are you trying the correct method for starting this car? Normally, the complete 500 range has no starter BUTTON---you turn the ignition key to the point that all your warning lights come on, fully pull the LEFT lever between the seats (which is the cold-start enrichment---often called the 'choke') and then fully pull the RIGHT-HAND lever fully up; this is the starter lever. When you pull the right hand lever up, the engine should crank over, and the engine will eventually 'catch'. To stop cranking the engine over, just release the lever--it is spring-loaded at the starter.

Thanks for the reply. You’re correct, I do know the starting procedure. The “button” I’m referring to is back on the starter in the engine bay. I’m sure by your response I’m using the incorrect term for it. I actually pressed it on accident the first time when I was fumbling around for the cable to see if it was connected properly. check out the pic. Thanks again.

Yup, button is as good a description as any! So let's rationalise your problem; is your engine actually cranking when you pull the lever? or, are the lights on the instrument cluster just going dim? If it is the latter, the first thing that I would suggest that you check is that the battery IS fully charged and then that the terminals are making a good connection--it might be worthwhile taking them off, cleaning them and then refitting them properly.
If the engine IS cranking correctly, remove the rearmost (actually the 'front' of the engine) spark-plug, earth it out on the engine and ask somebody to crank the engine (with the ignition on)--have you got a spark? Let's go from there.

Sounds like the cable is only barely short enough, so that the lever on the starter body only pushes the button to the point of making electrical contact some of the time.

Most likely cause of the problem isn't the actual length of the cable, but that the cable is not properly anchored under the car on the way to the starter. It should be anchored under the car in a way that keeps the attachment to the lever on the motor in enough tension that a pull on the lever in front causes good solid electrical contact on the "button" on the starter.

I will definitely take a look! Thanks for your suggestion and time!

With respect to 'Popitinpete', if the engine is cranking when you pull the lever (between the seats) then I would say that the cable adjustment is OK---leave as is. The cable CAN be adjusted to a small degree by moving the cable attachment onto a lower hole on the button's operating lever. But be careful, if you make it too tight there is a chance that engine movement will engage the starter. If the engine IS being cranked with the starter-lever, we need to look at other causes. let's try and eliminate one thing at a time.

Silly question----you have checked that there is petrol in the tank? Was there just enough in the tank to start it and drive it off the trailer?

My mistake, my 'pull lever' reply was really to myself because my initial post said 'turn key', forgot they were lever start. I could not edit it so I quoted myself and put pull lever. Wasn't a silly comment

Yes, it was low for sure, but I added 2 gallons before I started messing around. It actually would not start on the trailer, we had to roll it off. It started and ran at the dealership. I have the video of them starting it and driving it onto the trailer. Thank you.

Right, that's one possible 'fault' taken of the list!

Ok, we have spark, I checked that. I think this one might be the starter cable not pulling enough to stay connected. It is frayed bad as you can see in the photo. I have a new one and I’d like to install it so I can move on from the starter cable in the future. Anyone install one of these? I’m guessing connect to the lever in the cab first, and then fish it back through the tunnel? Thanks

I can't remember for sure, but I'm pretty sure that the best way to do it is to push it from under the car forward through the tunnel to reach the hand lever.

Ok, I ended up just adjusting the current installed cable to check, and she fired up. Thanks for all the help everyone! I’ll consider this case closed. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻
