People:

I am trying to decide whether to stick with the original felt system under the rear seat and parcel shelf or use some modern equivalent.

I am leaning towards original along with everything else to date; any wise guidance on this?

it comes down to preference
Due to the set up, you are never going to make it really quiet.
Mine has the original felt behind the rear seat. Standard exhaust and its a comfortable noise level

Having driven my 500R at speed for a long period last weekend. I'm thinking of cracking out the aviation headsets and intercom that I use in one of my other cars.

On a positive note, if you don't want to talk to the wife, its useful to have a lot of noise in the cabin :D

The issue I had with the felt one was any water leaks soak into the felt and then sit and create a rust trap.

Any thoughts on these things and what they do?

It would look like the water might sit on top and preferentially soak into the carpet, so being a good thing for slowing rust

I wouldn’t want to fix them too firmly in case I need to check something underneath though

Good insulation makes these cars so much more enjoyable
I disagree..the sound is part of the fun. At full belt the engine starts to sound less mechanical and the faster you go the further behind the sound is left. ;) There is less internal mechanical noise with the roof open for some reason.
I think the factory rear insulation is primarily against engine heat.

Carpet???? you see what happens when you make these cars more luxurious....
Stick with the Prototypi rubber mats!

I don't think you could really reduce the noise levels to any level that most people would find acceptable...
Just drive them slower with a bigger smile...

You don't have to worry, it's never going to be a Lexus quiet in there ;) :D

I found that the combination of aluminum type insulation with 5-6mm foam on top works great to reduce heat and some rackety vibrations and noises. You still hear plenty of engine without road and gearbox/transaxle noise. Both should be nonabsorbent closed cell materials. If you know the track of water leak, you can shape the insulation in a way that it acts like a bucket. You might need to glue few spots to the sidewalls like an inner rocker or wherever the water runs down from and it will puddle up in there, under the carpet or original rubber mats if that's what you prefer. Metal stays dry(y)

That would indicate that you take the car out in the wet

or worst still drive it through rivers like a certain fiat500

A small river like this never did any harm...lubricates the rubber bushes, washes off the oil leaks and tests how effectively your sealant has been applied.:D:D:D
