Has anyone replaced the gear lever socket bushing, is it just a matter of disconnecting the cables then replace in situ or do you need the gear lever unit removed?

Never fitted one, but looking at a photo of the complete lever on eBay, it doesn't look like anything underneath holding it in.
So as you say cables off (by the way noted wear /rust around the metal ball joint connected to the arm on the lever) then disconnect the spring on left side, on the eBay one it looks like a "spire nut" type clip to release , but not sure .
It then looks like a case of levering it up and out of the plastic cup, it may help if the cup stays behind until able to squeeze the plastic crown ears inwards to release it.
I recently changed the gear cables on a 2010 Doblo Maxi 1.6 multijet and found it easier to pry the sockets off the ball joints by placing an open ended 13 mm spanner between the two parts to ease it off.
Looking at your old one , you may need some silicon grease to help assembly.
Perhaps another Forum Member has changed one recently to give current advice?:)

I found an explanation on a Facebook group. It's just basically cables off then pry the tabs on the white plastic bushing inwards to unclip and pull out past the spring. Need to order a part. Fiat don't do them but they are available online.
Have to sort the other end onto of the gearbox where the cables join but the cable I need off is stuck probably won't get it off without destroying the cable end, looks like you can buy the cable ends separately that just screw on though. Left it soaking over night and see if it comes off first.

Yes that sounds about right I noticed the plastic crown had slots in it which if pushed inwards should release the bush, my only thought was if the round swivel part of the gear lever was still in the bush it may stop it coming out, but all you can do is see what works best.
What I mentioned with a 13 mm spanner allows even pressure all around the cups on cable ends to ease them off, rather than just a screwdriver from one direction unless bush is well worn already of course.:)
