Just to say hi from West Sussex. Google led me here as I have a LH top catch sliding door question.

I’ll search out the relevant forum once home and on the iPad, but previous owner did the conversion and doors off respray, leaving an essential part missing. And I’ve no idea what it’s called but it must be a rod of some sort for the too catch to grab and pull the door in. Rain gets in.

Good to find an ‘actual’ forum. I use a few, bushcraft uk, torch forums, and the level of help and friendliness is generally fantastic. Reddit? Phhhh!!!

Striker plate is the name
Next time you see a similar Van ask if you can take a photo of the part

I have a feeling you may find the retaining bolts have snapped off in the vehicle body and been painted over.

Thanks all. I emailed the pics to Coastal Motorhomes as I’m off for a bit in the van and will be passing Ringwood. I’ll see what they say, at the moment I was told on the phone that the top catch in the pic was fitted afterwards and there should be a strike plate and not a clasp.

I’m hoping the pics might help them.

Just an update. This is the part that was missing, a striker pin.

Problem is, there was a captive nut the other side of it that allowed for a certain amount of adjustment. Whoever did the respray undid pin and the nut will be down inside the panel. It’s definitely not inside a slot within that hole because I put a cheapo endoscope in and had a look.

Not sure there’s a fix for this now?

Find the part numbers for all the missing parts , photos of the missing parts, work out how they fit together. Work out How to access the void behind the empty hole ..... through the back of a storage cupboard?

Put it all together.

I suggest next time you see a similar van ask owner if you can take a few pictures to help you.

Cheers, but short of removing a top rack/cupboard and all the panelling there’s no access from the inside. I’m just letting the dog out for a wee, I’ll see if I can get a pic so you can see what I mean.

What’s inside that I saw on the endoscope, is a U-shaped slot. This would have braced the nut so it could be tightened without spinning, but allow it to be loosened a little to slide the pin up or down a few mil for the catch to grab it squarely. Removing it completely, the nut would have just fallen out of the slot and be inside the bottom of the door.

So the only access to get fingers on it would be to either basically rip out one side of the van from the inside, or cut out a section of steel from the door, fit the nut and pin, then weld the thing back in again. It’s all a massive PITA, increasingly I find more and more things in there that suggest the guy that converted it overthought everything.

Originally he had the respray done (Audi Nardo grey) to use the van to tow his Audi RS in the same colour down to Le Mans to race it. Means it has the 2.3 Multijet engine, apparently it gave him more towing capacity. I dunno, but he wasn’t short of money. There’s an inverter fitted which was solely to power a microwave oven, it’s been handy to plug a vacuum cleaner into and run a battery charger, first thing I chucked out was the microwave. Definitely overthunk ;)
