Hey guys, I've had my 1.2 Pop for just over a month now, I absolutely love it, still look forward to driving it everyday, just wondering what MPG you are all getting?

I'm getting around 43, but I'm sure before I bought it that I read it is supposed to achieve high 50's, am I a bad driver? I try to do as I'm told and change gear when it tells me to on the dashboard but obviously I'm not as good as I thought

When your car gets to 7000 miles it should be fully run in and you will get 50mpg if you take it easy.

It depends on lots of things. To see the best numbers avoid braking at (nearly) all costs, use the highest gear possible, i.e. 30mph in 5th when it's not an incline, change up quickly, accelerate slowly, keep the speed down too say 60mph max. Keep tyres up to pressure, don't let it idle when cold. Basically drive like an OAP minus the high revs.

Haha thanks for the advice pearce_jj I will try to think OAP when I drive home at 5.30. RUI Yikes by the time my car has done 7,000 miles I'll have had it longer than a year, it's my first new car and I didn't realise it took so long to wear in. 5th gear at 30mph is also new to me but seems to work pretty well for the 500. Can't wait til it's wore in enough to not need 2nd gear when going up the smallest hill in the world!

One thing I'd mention, in future try to use the search function on the forum, this topic comes up for discussion at least half a dozen times a year and the information is already there :)https://www.fiatforum.com/500/246638-1-2-fuel-consumption.html
As always, my figures...... http://www.fuelly.com/driver/306maxi/500

I tried to go back through the threads as I was sure I'd seen one last time I logged on, I got back to 4 weeks ago and couldn't find anything. Then the one I did find had been closed due to 2 posters arguing.

That's not the search function though. There is a search function on the forum here -> https://www.fiatforum.com/search.php or my personal favourite -> [ame="http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&biw=1357&bih=634&q=site%3Afiatforum.com%2F500+%3Cinsert+search+text+here%3E&btnG=Search&oq=site%3Afiatforum.com%2F500+%3Cinsert+search+text+here%3E&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&gs_sm=s&gs_upl=2860l9657l0l12141l30l30l0l29l0l0l156l156l0.1l1l0"]site:fiatforum.com/500 <insert search text here> - Google Search[/ame]

I agree, Google tends to be generally better than any of these forum built-in search functions.

To the OP - check out fuelly to see what others are dong. Re 5th@30, be careful not to labour the engine though, slip it down to 4th at the slightest sight of an incline, and 3rd if it's what might be described as a hill.

This mpg thing can be very variable. I use my 1.2 on a regular journey of about four miles in town from cold, then about seven miles on 60mph roads. I change up at around 3,200-3,500 when making brisk progress on the 60mph road. My average speed is about 21mph and I generally get about 45mpg. This idea of changing into 5th at 30mph in order to get more mpg is not for me.I'm no mechanic, but I think a car engine benefits from being revved a little rather than slogging along in too high a gear.

The point is that there is so little power needed at low speed (on the flat) that the engine may as well just idle since the fuel is being used almost entirely to overcome pumping losses. It's how any automatic will work, DSGs in particular.

I've found the MJ is still improving at 36k, and I had a Saxo years ago (TU5) which went on improving to about 50k, but it did declined fairly steadily after that. A friend has a Fabia VRS which is getting better still with over 130k on the clock.

It's all through the forum, lots of members have reported improved performance from the 1.2 at around 6-8 thousand miles. :)

I would say that mine is probably still improving at 28k miles especially after being serviced a couple of months ago.

Some stats to back it up

Avg MPG for 2009 45mpg over 5,365 miles
Avg MPG for 2010 48.3mpg over 15,689 miles
Avg MPG so far for 2011 is 49.5 over 7,102 and I wouldn't surprised to see it over 50mpg after I fill it up next. Averaging 59.8mpg indicated on his tank so far.

That is every single fuel up the car has ever done being tracked on fuelly so other than potential issues with pumps being inaccurate, it tells the story pretty well :)

In fact here's a graph :p

Ignore the bits where it drops down to the bottom, that's where I've combined fuel ups. The vertical axis only starts at 40 so as to exaggerate things a little :) As you can see there's a clear upward trend. If it weren't for the fact that I run skinnier winter tyres you'd see a dropoff in economy from November to February.

I did, the link is below, how do I get my photos to show up on the list of members motors? I noticed some are like mine, but most show on the list.

Rachie, if you want your car pics to appear in the scrolling banner at the top of the 500 page you need to upload them to the host site on the forum gallery. When you post pictures as attachments in the Members Motors all the photos and comments are visible to people who visit that section but the first photo in your thread is not picked up for display.
