Our Multiwagon went in for its MOT today.

EGR blanked off.
also has a
Tuning Box set to level 7(of 8).

I took it to a reputable garage for its MOT as my families safety is paramount.

FAILED .. :(

On excessive play, nearside Track Rod End. (y)

With regards to blanking off the EGR and using a Tuning Box check this out.

Diesel MOT Smoke Test Results(Diesel emissions test)

Smoke Readings
Peak = 0.55m-1

Zero Drift = 0.02m-1 PASS (MAX - 0.1)

Average = 0.53m-1

MOT Test Result
Fast Pass = 0.53m-1 PASS (MAX - 1.5)

Good work ;) nice to know that the tuning boxes are rarely noticed! Nice low figure for the smoke test too!

The fella that tested the car said modern diesels rarely fail emission tests unless there's a fault, the most common one being the EGR.

He said he'd never failed, or heard of anyone who had failed a car because of a Tuning Box.
However he did say that they may be a problem in the future if they were detectable/visible, as certain DIY tuning products will be an instant failure soon.

From December 2011, the below changes will come into force, which will be very bad news for some.
HID lights – Specifically those aftermarket kits that give the very bright headlight beams. Any cars found with these kits will be an automatic MOT failure. Testers are able to easily spot the difference between HID kits, and manufacturer fitted Xenon’s. Easy to spot as Xenon cars have suspension level sensors, in car beam adjuster, and usually headlight washers.
Chipped ECU’s - Unsure of just how/if this one will realistically be enforced, but any cars with chipped ECU’s will in theory be an MOT failure. I can only assume VOSA have found an easy way of checking ECU software through the cars OBD port (diagnostic plug).
Wiring harness – The general condition of he wiring harness will be checked to make sure there is no rubbing or chaffing, and that the harnesses are in generally good condition. If unsecure, or damaged again MOT failure.
Airbag warning lights - If any warning lights are illuminated, it will again be an MOT failure.

Why should a chipped ecu be an mot fail if it complies with emissions. it cant be classed as a diy modification. The floor mats i have in my car are more of a hazard than the chipped ecu as they can move around and get caught under the pedals.

Does that mean my car will fail because it has non standard floor mats?

In Northern Ireland thay dont check the emmissions on diesels anymore because they've destroyed too many engines.

Shadeyman, you've just scared me with all those extra things being checked from Dec '11! :( not that I have any of that anyway...but still! Things are getting stricter, huh.
