General egr valve

General egr valve

just read through this hilarious thread entirely!. brilliant stuff.
SHADEYMAN IS SPOT ON & ID SAY ARGONAUGHT DELUDED!.
FACT: twice now while driving my multipla jtd fully loaded with wife & kids
i have had DANGEROUS sudden power loss = FACT.
on both occasions this was due to EGR = FACT.
I WOULD SAY EGR ON A DIESEL CAR IS DANGEROUS.
i was stupid enough to buy a new genuine EGR, didnt last long.
EGR FULLY BLANKED OFF BY AA = PERMANENT REPAIR = JOB WELL DONE.
car is now safe- no sudden power loss.
car is far more responsive
i have more mpg
car runs smoother altogether
temperature gauge absolutely as it was prior to blanking off egr.

ITS REALLY A "NO BRAINER".
Argonaught, if you have a dog & it craps, would you shovel the crap
back into it? :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:
Better fuel economy, cleaner engine, smoother engine, safer car.
DO THE MATHS!

thanks sleepy1 for details/pic is yours the1,9jtd 8v ?? and whats part number for new egr or if off ebay whats item number thanks

Pic is of my 2006 Multipla JTD1.9 and this is the part off ebay http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220746080570&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

Still working fine but you will need one of these or similar to reset the warning light/beep http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140443132982&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

FWIW, Multipla forum had a similar debate about EGR operation recently.

Although the EU specified the relevant Euro3 and Euro4 emissions specs and legislated that cars must meet these emissions standards, disabling the EGR on Euro3 vehicles in the UK is not illegal and does not affect the diesel MOT.
In other words, the legiislation is a manufacturer requirement only, there is no legislation applicable to the end user.

Can't comment on Euro4 vehicles as I don't know the extent to which the DPF relies on a functioning EGR, however with the EGR disabled and everything else within parameters there are less particles.

Our Multiwagon went in for its MOT.

EGR blanked off.
also has a
Tuning Box set to level 7(of 8).

I took it to a reputable garage for its MOT as my families safety is paramount.

FAILED ..

With regards to blanking off the EGR and using a Tuning Box check this out.

Diesel MOT Smoke Test Results(Diesel emissions test)

Smoke Readings
Peak = 0.55m-1

Zero Drift = 0.02m-1 PASS (MAX - 0.1)

Average = 0.53m-1

MOT Test Result
Fast Pass = 0.53m-1 PASS (MAX - 1.5)

hi again previously removed egr valve and cleaned but after few hundred mile the dreaded judder under accelleration back so purchased new one fitted today feels much better but still got slight judder under acceleration ?any ideas why guys ,also replaced maf and is fitted with tuningbox ? :bang: update!!! went out and made/fitted blanking plate car drives great blanked off could it beanything else egr side of thing?? thanks keith

I've noticed a tiny lag on mine when accelerating from a lightly loaded engine, bit like a flat spot/turbo lag but I'm sure it didn't do it before I "fixed" the EGR. The wife, being my placebo test, says there is absolutely no difference at all so maybe it's my imagination. Still, I'd be happy to accept this tiny loss of performance if it makes the car a bit greener and if this is the price for avoiding acid rain I'm happy to pay but there seems to be no definative answer regarding the valve's true value.
Anyway, if I wanted performance a Multipla would be a very odd choice to begin with.

Cheers,

Keith

I did the same as you sleepy, there is a performance drop I think and wouldn't say that it solved the black smoke under acceleration. Or maybe I just need to stop putting the pedal to floor so much. As for better fuel economy I am not decided on that. Filled up last week so when it gone will know

I would have thought so but obviously not for everybody.

You can either resolver a problem the cheap way or you can fix it properly (and I certainly don't intend explaining this to you as it's already been covered exhaustively in this thread)

Everyone has the choice and it's up to them what they choose.

BTW, you're not likely to see improved mpg or a smoother engine compared to a correctly running engine (unless the EGR system is actually faulty).

...and I don't really have a problem with MATHS thanks :)

Bad luck that Keith :(

Did you fit the special swirl gasket as I think that was designed to fix that issue ?

It's worth I think commenting that if anyone wants to fix their EGR properly then fitting the swirl gasket should be considered an essential part of that fix.

The EGR system, if working correctly, will certainly NOT increase fuel consumption (hardly be a 'green' feature it it did) and should if anything provide a slight improvement. To be fair, I think it's pretty negligible, as I was unable to detect any difference on the short test I ran.

No motor manufacture is ever going to take steps that degrade fuel consumption on a motor vehicle they produce unless balanced by gains in comfort or safety (EGR fits neither of those categories).

Obviously driving an engine with defective EGR is a bad idea and in that case it's far better to block it.

The Vauxhall Z19D** engines are the same as the equivalent Fiat JTD engines, so most of the parts will be the same. Vauxhall prices for the same parts are cheaper than Fiat prices though.

The Vauxhall part number (55215032) in the eBay listing is the same as the Fiat part number for the EGR valve for a 1910 8v JTD 115 Grande Punto and Croma. I've no idea why Fiat list a different part number for the Stilo 1910 8v JTD 115.

The only difference between the Vauxhall and Fiat supplied EGR valves that I can think of is that perhaps they use a different connector.

cheaper still off fleabay:)

Re: egr cost?

hi guys took egr off cleaned it up now playing up again so gona buy new 1
is it shopforparts that we get discount for and whats discount they offer?? and has anybody tryed the egr valve that fits the cdti engine item numb on ebay is 320657091924

hi all,
do you clean it properly, full dismantle,
drill 8mm hole in end of plastic end cover,
remove the six bolts that hold both parts to-gether( take note were the plate fits, mark it ),
get a thin drift and drive out the plunger ( this is the bit that sticks ),
get a thin rod and cut accross diagonally so you can put a strip of fine wet & dry paper in the slot you have cut in the rod,
well lube it with oil and attach to electric drill,
put into tube that the plunger came out of and give it a good spin, this will clear out all the rust and gum,
then clean up the plunger of all the rust and pitting give it and the tube a coat of copper grease and put plunger back in it's tube,
then set about cleaning up the valve end, clean the plunger rod and grease it with copper grease,
then clean up the valve it's self very dirty job use plenty of carb cleaner and grease it's shaft were it goes through into valve body,
bolt up and refit.
hope this helps members with egr valve probs.
rick.
