dunno where to start?

I want to make my own bass box for my directed xtereme 10" sub, cus my bank balance is running dry and i cant afford to buy one. Can any1 help me on anythin like type of wood?, the design? cus i avent done this b4 and i dont have a clue.

Re: dunno where to start?

this would be a post for the ice section, but from what i have learnt and read, the best material to use is 15mm mdf

the design can be anything you want, but you have to have the box that it is going to be fitted it made to exact measurements if you want it to be perfect

google will have the answer and should be able to provide you with pictures and diagrams as to how to go about it

Re: dunno where to start?

tbh it would be cheaper to buy one than buy all the wood, screws, woodglue, connectors and covering...

iirc theyre about £49 in Halfords, so cheaper just about anywhere else...

but if you want to build one yourself, good luck (y)

Custom enclosures eh?

Have a look at

http://www.crutchfieldadvisor.com/r.../build_box.html

for tips on building a box

and

http://www.jlaudio.com/tutorials/bracing/

for bracing (well worth it IMO)

My enclosure cost under £25 to build IIRC, may have been cheaper.

18mm (3/4 inch) MDF is the stuff to use, IMO ply isn't dense enough for good sound.

The good thing about building your own enclosure is that it can be tailored to match the recommended volume required by your sub. Premade boxes would not necessarily be of the correct volume. Also, if you have a small boot (e.g. cinq) it isn't that practical to have a box sitting in the middle of the boot.

I have a custom enclosure built by myself for my sub.

I used:

18mm MDF
Liquid nails for construction and sealing
2 banana plugs for sub connection
2 inch screws
carpet that I got from the offcuts bin from my local carpet shop

That's it I think.

Couple of points

  • Make sure it is completely airtight
  • Don't have 2 dimensions equal (e.g. height and width the same). I have read that if 2 dimensions are the same, then problems with the sound will happen.

If you need anymore help, post it up.
