I have some problems with our Punto 1.2 16v (Type 188)
The clutch pedal is stiff and creaks a lot when you step it down.

I have read some threads in here.
I know that Punto hasn't go special durable clutches. If the clutch is about to fail in ours, I do not know. But there is no vibration when the clutch engages.

I suspect the slave or master clutch cylinder. But since there are no visible leaks, it's a little hard to figure out which one fails. The reason I suspect one of these is that when I drove in queues, the clutch pedal suddenly lost its function and the car rolled even if the pedal was disengaged. When I took it out of gear, I could not get it in gear again.
I pulled over and waited for 5 min. After the pedal worked fine again
I'll try to bleed the slave cylinder, but how open the bleed nipple? There is no nut on the nipple where you can put a wrench on??

You bleed clutch like this.

See the clip silver clip in your pic, holding pipe in, push it up from bottom half way, DO NOT PULL IT OUT ALL THE WAY, I also put a pipe on to bleed hole and into a container containing brake and clutch fluid with the pipe in the fluid same as if you where doing brakes.
pull pipe out half way, and get a friend to push clutch pedal down, and as they are pushing it down push the pipe back in and push clip down, repeat process untill it feels better.
Warning, AS YOU PUSH THE PIPE BACK IN AS YOUR FRIEND IS PRESSING ON PEDAL, THERE IS LOTS OF PRESSURE NEEDED FROM YOU TO PUSH PIPE BACK IN, MAKE SURE YOU GET A GOOD GRIP AS IT WILL BE HARD TO PUSH BACK IN.
That is the way i did mine, no doubt someone else will know a better way.

The clutch pressure plate springs could be broken.Get an assistant to press the clutch in while you listen around the gearbox area. If there is stiffness in the pedal which varies as you depress it and there is a creaking clicking noise from the clutch bellhousing it's almost certain the clutch springs are on their way out.

Thanks guys! (y)

I will try you method David and I am afraid that you are right Brendan
Okay I will be easier to change clutch on a Punto compared with one of my Citroen CX in which, you have to take the hole engine out!

A good small garage will charge about £120 plus parts to change a Punto clutch.

Absolutely do make sure the gearbox input shaft bearing is 100%. Any roughness or slack and it must be changed to avoid the new clutch getting oiled up.

TBH the parts are cheap so if its done a high mileage, you might as well do the gearbox bearings and seal anyway.

I wish I lived in UK with these prices.
In DK a complete clutch replacement costs about £500

So planing doing it myself and then I can keep the costs down and do it for about £160 i parts alone.

My
Punto
has only driven about 100.000 km/ 62.000 Miles, but thanks for the tip regarding the input shaft bearing and seal.

So looks like I got myself a weekend job

Re: Squeaky clutch pedal on Punto Mark II UPDATE

Well time for at update....
I haven't changed the clutch yet.

Two months ago, my old uncle at 79, who has been a mechanic at the Danish military his whole life, was visiting a Sunday afternoon.

We agreed that he would drop by another day so we could take a look at it together, because he could not believe that the clutch was done already.

We found out that the creaking sound came from the clutch release bearing. Since there was no bearing noise, he thought it was because it was dry and we tried to spray it with some WD40 through the inspection hole.

It helped and worked fine for a few months now.
I have driven to work in Punto'en in the last three weeks now and now it's starting to creak again ... Damn it!

So yesterday I looked at it again. This time I sprayed a little WD40 on the connection between the slave cylinder and clutch release shaft and on to the shaft where it enters the gearbox.

Oh boy what a difference! :D

Now there's no more creaking, the clutch pedal is easy to step down now. Not as good as if it was new, but acceptable.

The correct solution would be to take it all apart and lubricate with grease instead of WD40, I know.

But as longe as I can get it going,
without having to take it apart, this is how it gets.

Re: Squeaky clutch pedal on Punto Mark II UPDATE

But the release bearing cant be accessed for grease without taking the gearbox out of the car. Well done for keeping it going. When the clutch pedal action gets stiff or lumpy you will know its time for a new clutch.

You might want to source parts from www.eurocarparts.com

I am sure they would send out by DHL/UPS if you ask them.
