While getting some new tyres for out 4 year old (50k) Panda Eleganza the guy at Kwikfit checked the brakes; and scribbled down a quote for £220 to replace them. Biting my lip I walked out.

I've replaced pads myself on other cars, but i assume this is more. I'm OK to do it myself- but what do it need????

2 x Brake Disc (Front)
1 x Axle Brake Pads (Front)

But for the rear.... is it drums or discs, pads or shoes???

Would you expect all of these to have worn out at 50k?

Please forgive my ignorance!
Thanks

have a look at the rears, do they look like the fronts........then they're discs
and easy to replace
if they don't look like discs then they are drums........a bit more difficult to replace

good luck

front discs and pads for about £40, 30-40 mins for anyone who can use a spanner, pliers to change

rear shoes about £30, same amount of time and skill level

shop4parts do discount for forum members, say about a ton delivered, a morning and a couple of cups of tea, and two fingers to kwikfit, who won't even look at painted calipers......

the drums come off very easily, have a good look at the shoes, i wouldn't expect much wear, maybe a clean out of any dust build up, btw: where you based? if you're close enough to NW london, next time we have a pitstart session, come along and have a go

Are you sure they actually need replacing, Kwikfit and the like are well known for drumming up unnecessary business when changing tyres.
