they dont, i had a 1994 L plate that had the leter injection with the cat mounted behind the engine with the cable gearchange, that never had that problem. easy to get the sparks out without removing carb inj unit
 
Well, Red has only broken down in the middle of fields so far. . . . . . . and only when Gina has been in the car!
I've always managed to get him going again about an hour later once I've re-connected his ignition and Gina's re-connected mine!:devil:

Your just going to have to wait n see if the system has corroded. I would change the thermostat as a precautionary measure and give it a real good flush. It may be worth flushing the heating pipes seperately to ensure it is clean. Remember to back flush as well.
 
Ah! That's it then Alan! Just water for coolant!:eek:

I spent two hours running flushing him on Sunday! and With 2 part Heavy Duty flush and plenty of fresh water.
Also back flushed the rad through the air lock tap.
Have bought a new Thermostat - easy to fit so will do that hopefully tomorrow.
Just blasted him for a run - his temp guage is still a tad over 90 but not as high as it was.
his new coolant still appears clean but will check in daylight. . . . . .
 
When using only water the temp does go higher than when using coolant. If you are conserned a friend recommends water wetter or wetter water (trust me it's real) apparently it makes the coolant conduct the heat from the engine even better.

But I would like to report that fitting a New Thermostat to 'Green' has cured his high blood pressure!

This is the old one! YES! the brown stuf ahd to be CHIPPED off!

My car has been run on water I'm guessing since my dad got it in 1994. The inside looked pretty rusted out when I had the head off, will this cause me problems in the future, like blowing its gasket again?
I'm now starting to think I should get a scrap engine, becuase it will most likely have been better maintained.

Adding coolant raises the boiling point of the water in the rad - thus if the temp does go over 100 Celcius, it won't boil and turn to steam and therefore increase pressure in the system and blow it!:D
