Morning all

Thought I'd put an update on about my little panda. I picked him up from his MOT yesterday and was shocked to be given a PASS!

Just a few advisory notes:
N/F tyre worn close to legal limit - Yep I knew that
N/F shock absorber has light misting of oil
O/F shock absorber has light misting of oil - the old covers on these where broken so I had ripped off the last shreds anyway.
O/R wheel bearing has slight play
O/F wheel bearing slightly worn and noisy
Side lamps not working with ignition switched off - He admitted that he didn't know about the 'special' button to turn the key to get them on!

So not too bad at all in my view.

I was so happy I went straight to the petrol station and merrily filled him up, arrived home to find petrol pissing all over my rear wheel. This soured my happiness slightly to say the least! After some quick action to get the wheel off and put a tub under the leak I was able to get a pack of 'Petro Patch' from my local garage and hopefully he's going to pull through. I found that there had already been a patch on that part of the pipe from the tyre rubbing it. Last week I'd had a couple of folk in the back for the first time which is probably the reason. I shall see if I can pull it a bit further forwards to prevent any more problems. From what I can see on here it seems like a regularish problem.

What are peoples experiences of patches? Am I in need of a new filler pipe, and do fiat even sell them anymore?

I'm going to need a new set of tyres soon, which tyres are good? I live in the north west highlands of Scotland and so often have wet, snowy and icy roads to deal with. I'm going to need a set that will handle well on the twisty hilly roads, deal with lots of rain, snow covered roads and also be happy and comfortable on the 70 mile trip to the nearest super markets when I need to...oh, and of course cheap... Any suggestions?!

I'm not too worried about the slight misting of oil on the shock absorbers, should I be? I couldn't see a problem not replacing the worn out rubber covers that where on them since lots of car don't have them anyway.

Wheel bearings shouldn't be a problem (thanks to the guide on here!), I assume the rear one won't be too bad either... Any recommendations on where to get new bearings from?

Over the months I've done a number of other things to him:

I've upgraded the bulbs and relays in the headlights and spotlights, so much easier to see the deer running in front of me now.

Replaced all ball joints and CV joints due to the old lot being worn and perished.

I'm sure I've done some other stuff, just can't think what it is..

Things on the to do list:

Sort out rust on passenger door, last owner had made a poor attempt, I've bought an old Mig welder and am learning how to use it at the mo.

The underneath of the car needs a good clean and to be wax oiled again.

He has a patch of rust under the rear window, not sure what i'm going to do yet but something has to be done there. Living by the sea really doesn't help with this whole rust business!

Rear windscreen washer pump isn't working properly, have to investigate.

all the wheels are looking shoddy, they where all painted silvery at some point and it's wearing off, I'm going to clean them up and paint them white.

Rear window demister connector isn't connected to screen, have to fit it on somehow - my cheap soldering iron doesn't want to do it.

The roof rack is rusting and not overly secure - I plan to sort out rust and would like to adjust it so that it'll come further forwards. Whilst I've had my canoe on the roof before, it's not the sturdiest rack at the moment.

The bull bars have their coating coming off, so I need to take them off and remove all the loose paint/plastic stuff and give them a new coat of paint.

I think all that should keep me busy for a while! No doubt I will think of more things to do at some point.

If anyone has any suggestions, please feel free to give them.

Thanks for looking

Conor

Well done on the MOT pass. the tyers mentioned are spot on just what you need. I live in a very high spot in Yorkshire called Mountain, Queensbury. 1100 feet above sea level. If you get snow in Scotland we get a good amount too, these tyers just eat their way through the stuff without problem. The size you require is 145x13 no bigger they just fit, and do not rub at the back even when fully loaded. They sing very well because of the tread(y)it does not bother me. Good in wet weather but they do not like bends at speedor reflecting cats eyes tend to jump off them if you tou do not hit them center on. All you have to do is remember what you are driving on and give them respect:worship:

Cheers for the replys

I suspected that patches and hope where the only cure for the filler pipe!

I think those tyres would be great if I had a spare set of rims, but they look a little hard core for general driving around in non snowy conditions. If they don't like sharp corners then they won't like the wiggly coastal roads around here. I'll keep them in mind though.

Cheers

^^

Explain

Blackpool

Just by the ignition key there is a button to press in and it allows the key to be turned further around (opposite way to starting) which puts on the side lights and allows you to take the key out and leave the vehicle with side lights on.

Hope that explains enough, if not I can try again.

excellent, I never knew that. going to try it later :D

I always wondered what that was for.

My nephew thought you had to push it to start the car. Bless. He couldnt get the steering lock off lol

Cant believe you got an advisory for it though!

Parking lights arne't even a requirement - just an option that has to be working if fitted - not that he would even know if they were there or not.

Cowboy MOT'ers, always assuming! haha

Congrats on the pass though. Also, those tyres are ACE!! Makes me want a 4x4 even more now!

On my '88 Panda one of the advisories was 'chassis undersealed'.

That was due to the half inch thick bitumen roofing paint I used to sneak it through its mot! hahaha

Didn't work though. They put a hammer through the sill where I hadn't seen the rot. Bad times :(

So they put the fact that you'd used underseal as an advisory

The underseal advisory seems a touch daft, but I'd rather they put stuff down as an advisory than not tell me about it in case I hadn't noticed. The're good folk down at the garage.

The underseal advisory probably means they couldnt see the brake pipes or thought you had done it to hide some corrosion
