Hi,
First of all 'hello' everybody, I'm new here. Just bought a silver/grey 1.2 Sport. Very impressed so far considering my previous motor was a 2.0 147.
Anyway - my existing steering wheel/Krooklock doesn't fit. I wondered what anybody else was using as where I park sometimes I need a visual deterrent.
Thanks all.

I can understand your desire for some additional security, especially as the 500 does not have an alarm. However, I question the value of a Krooklock as I recall seeing tests where professional thieves (known as "teenagers") can remove them in seconds.

I wonder if you should consider having an alarm fitted? Other in the Forum have, at not too high a cost I recall. (A search of the forum might bear fruit.)

As for me - I live in leafy Hertfordshire, behind locked gates, and the 500 is garaged overnight. Clearly I cannot rule theft out 100%, but I don't feel the need for any additional security.

Hi,
I just think if there's a choice between a car with a steering lock and one without it may just be a slight put off, even in leafy Liverpool :). Thanks for the suggestion though, I'll definately look at an alarm.

I would agree with all before me and you're welcome to the FF (y).

My wife & I drove a 147 1.6 petrol and it was a thirsty animal (typical 25-30mpg) - you'll enjoy the frugality of the 1.2 in comparison.

I have a big disklok yellow steering lock that I used to use on a RS (in my old leafy thieving area) but it does not fit the 500 - the boss that holds the airbag protrudes. Even still I wouldn't use - I would end up damaging the interior.

The immobilser on the 500 (standard fit) is pretty good. They will probably try and get your keys than try and do any other 'work arounds'. The Meta Alarm from all accounts seems pretty good. It's highly unlikely they'll go after you 1.2 in leafy Liverpool. I'm assuming that you have wheel locks fitted. Best of luck with the motor (y)

Hi guys, I can't find any posts about having an alarm fitted. Does anybody have any info on this? Prices? Does it affect your insurance if you have an alarm fitted? As I was reading the thread last week about high insurance on the 500 because of the lack of alarm etc.

Thanks again for the info and glad to be on the forum. I had a 1998 Cinq a while ago and got some very helpful advice from this site so it's great to be back.

Yep, locking wheel nuts are firmly in place as I have the 16" multi spoke alloys. The 147 was averaging 23mpg, £1k insurance and £260 road tax. The 500 was a no-brainer. Doing some light modifications, chrome indicator bulbs, maybe a sticker or two and a damn good t-cut as soon as I can. :)

Sounds like a nice one. It's unusual to have the 16 multis on the sport - most owners seemed to go with the 5o-spoke with are difficult to refurbish. I don't know much about restoring paint work (I though I did until I came on it - what with all the 'talk' about chalking ? etc.) - but I would suggest that you don't use the T-cut  :).

Claying!

Chalking (Claying), GUI (RUI), Houndscloth (Houndstooth), DragDayQueen (TrackDayQueen) etc. etc. to name just a few brighten up this forum for me and I look forward to whatever comes next. :D

Keep up the good work Michael. (y)

I cann't blame the spellchecker (I was thinking of a picture of a matt car with chalk on it !) on that last one - but I wonder where the Houndstooth came from ? :)

Fear not - I have lots of experience using a mixture of coloured polish and t-cut. Just enough to rub out the scratches but not enough to dull the shine/lacquer.

Not sure I'd fancy refurbing the multi spokes or the standard alloys but at least the 16"'s are all one colour. I think some very fine wet and dry will sort out the scuffing round the rims. (y)

The multispokes are realtively easy to refurbish. (y)
Price I got yesterday was 4 wheels for the price of 3 at €95 a wheel. I need to go negotiate a bit more though ! The 5o-spokes I had were a mix of a chrome and alloy finish - these are more difficult & expensive  to refurbish (I didn't get them done) - but you haven't got them. :)
On the fine wet & dry my bodyshop repair man used 500 or was it a 1000 grade to revive a poorly lacquered front wing - I leave that to the experts. I don't know how successful it is to do a DIY 'repair' on an alloy.

Ta....I think 1000 or maybe even 2000 grade. Only doing a touch up job for now.

You say you 'had'.....what happened?

It was a '08 1.4 Sport in Metallic Black that was sold cheap last March because of mileage, registration country, a sag on the leather on the driver's side and scratched / scuffed 5o-spoke alloys for 48% of its original retail price. A previous prospective buyer wouldn't buy it because of the state of the alloys. I learned my lesson !

As loveshandbags posted, the DiskLok is supposidly the best physical deterrent out there, unless you have a rabid dog you'd like to keep locked in the car but then of course you have to get past it as well :p

I used to have one on my old Fiat coupe and know how easy they are to use and how much car thieves hate them.

Highly recomend them, I should use mine on the 500 but it's buried in the attic somewhere and I just can't get in tehre atm......

The one that I had in the picture was the old version which was easily broken at the 'hinge'. Version II rectified this and then the colour changed to silver. It wouldn't fit the 500 so leave yours in the attic !

Before I got the disklok I used to take the steering wheel off the car at night (this was before airbags) - but then they started to bring their own steering wheel. In the end I sold the car so I could sleep at night. It was only a RS Escort - it was even a 'real' RS.

Hi,
I just think if there's a choice between a car with a steering lock and one without it may just be a slight put off, even in leafy Liverpool :). Thanks for the suggestion though, I'll definately look at an alarm.

RobinPJs suggestion of doing a search on 'Alarm' produces excellent results. My experience of looking to fit an alarm resulted in not being prepared to pay €400 for the Fiat Meta Alarm fitted and I was not prepared to compromise the Fiat electrics to fit a €300 'other' alarm system. I did look at buying a Classified 'never opened' Meta alarm but could not get any re-assurance that they would not 'cut' wires - I was only interested in the fit using 'harnesses' so I could take it out when the car was being sold and put in the next one !
If the car was a A500 them I would fit the alarm with hesitation.

A rabid dog sounds like a good idea - but I don't think my wife would appreciate the dog being locked in the car overnight!

I put in a correctly left out word in case your wife might take offence !

Came across another idea in place of the rabid dog - see what you think...
