What does MK? stand for

What does the Mk1/Mk2 ... stand for. I've looked through the Fiat guide book and the Haynes manual - but not found any reference to this. I noticed that it is used on this forum and ebay quite a lot.

Mark 1 is the first punto, then you got the facelifted version, whenever they refresh a model it becomes another mark - mark 2/mark 2b. Now the latest is the mk3/Grande Punto.

Earlier and later shapes, engines and specific models. The older, rounder Punto (same shape as yours) is Mark 1, the later, squarer ones are Mark 2 and the later facelift ones are Mark 2.5 as it wasn't a complete overhaul.

mk1's were NOT facelifted to a mk2, they are whole different car, the difference between a mk2 and a mkb is a facelift and a host of 'alterations' and improvements.
